Love. A feeling? An action? A word? Does it even matter?

As humans we are hard-wired to intellectualize everything, in order to comprehend. We have been taught both deliberately and inadvertently, that a concept must bend to our intellect in order to be fully understood. I personally think that is where we go wrong with so many things. I do not necessarily mean “wrong” in the sense of ‘wrong versus right’. But more so that we undermine Love when we attempt to define it with words. Yet, in even saying this, I also do not seek to underestimate the power that words can wield.

But Love though? It will not be contained inside of any box of human understanding. It is more than we can intellectually grasp. It is fluid yet solid. It warms and cools. It is visible, yet invisible. Even here, I do not know whether my attempt at descriptors led YOU to further understanding, confusion or annoyance, regardless of how I felt while typing them. This is how we undermine Love. In thinking we can talk about Love without letting Love speak for itself. In thinking we can comprehend Love’s language without silencing our egoic demands. In thinking we can understand Love without knowing Love with our Inner Being.

We often say, “Make it make sense” when we are baffled by a thing. But as many of us know, particularly those with an active spiritual life; there are so many messages that we receive, inner revelations and moments of deep knowing that cannot be properly conveyed with words. How many of you have received messages or ‘downloads’ for others, that you were led to relay, yet when you communicated the message, the words just lacked a little something? The words that were uttered did not carry the same conviction that your inner knowing did. That’s because in those moments, we don’t “know” with our intellect. We know with our Inner Being. Not our thinking. Even now, as I type these words and as you read them, I hope you understand me with more than your intellect. I know many of you do.

This is how LOVE IS. You don’t have to have a high I.Q for Love. You do not have to earn Love. Nor do you have to buy Love. You don’t have to do hand stands, turn back flips and swing from chandeliers for Love. You do not have to perform for Love. I know what we have been taught or told about Love. But Love is neither conditional nor unconditional. I used to think it was either/or and I would always say, “My love comes with conditions.” But a more accurate statement for me would be, “Being a constant presence in my life comes with conditions.” Because it does. Friendships, relationships, jobs, partnerships, etc. Even my Coach/Client relationships. All of these come with healthy conditions for me and the party on the other end of their respective dynamic. But LOVE just IS. It does not need a descriptor, nor does it require a requisite to just BE what it IS.

For those of you who have given up on any form of companionship and connection with others, and you equate that with giving up on Love, I beseech you to meditate on this. Do not seek to know through my lens. Do not seek to know through the lens of others around you. Do not seek to know through the lens of your intellect. Seek to know through your own Inner Being. Once you find that knowing within, then circle it back around to your human understanding and move accordingly.
